FRACTAL GENERATORS 3:7

Fractint
FractInt  ~  v20.0  ~  DOS/Windows/Linux/Mac/BeOS  ~  900 Kb
author: The Stone Soup Group
Home page: http://www.fractint.org/
FractInt, the most famous of all the fractal generators, got a new update this last September. It can draw many fractal types in both 2D and 3D of up to 10^1600 zooming power. Version 20 now supports images larger than 2048x2048, adds evolver, and adds enhanced sound. Still available for different platforms. The Linux/UNIX flavor is called Xfractint.

FractSurf
FractSurf  ~  v2.0.1  ~ Win98/Me/XP  ~  929 Kb
author: Julian Bischof
Home page: http://www.fractsurf.de/
FractSurf can generate seven different types of fractal images, including mandelbrot, julia, dragon and quaternion. It also has the ability to work with layers, and save parameters as bookmarks. It also comes with a screensaver mode, so it can keep generating new images while your computer is idle.

The GIMP
The GIMP ~  v2.2  ~  Win+XP; Linux; Mac ~  7.11 MB
author: The GIMP Team
Home page: http://www.gimp.org
The GIMP isn't exactly a fractal generator, but since it's free and can render fractal pictures, I think it's a very good idea to include it in this list. As a graphics editor, the GIMP is an excellent tool that everyone should have (it cost nothing). It's also available for many platforms, including Windows, Macintosh and most Linux flavors. This editor comes with several plug-ins and filters that can produce beautiful fractals: Fractal Explorer, to create fratals using several well-known formulas (Mandelbrot, Julia, Barnsley, Lambda, etc.); Flame, for fractal flames, and IFSComposer, that start with the Sierpinski triangle. Requires a gtk+2 installation (an additional 3.37 MB download, link provided in the same page) before installing the GIMP on your system.

GF4
GF4  ~  v2.0 RC1 ~  Win9x/Me  ~  251 Kb
author: Peter Pawlowski
Home page: direct download (see below)
GF4 is a small, and splendid fractal generator that takes advantage of MMX and 3DNow! technologies to generate fractal images faster than most other generators. In such a small size, it packs several useful tools, including the most easy to use and efficient color map editor around. Image dimensions are also automatically determined by the user, and parameters are easily accessible by right clicking anywhere over the image. Parameter files can be saved, and images exported to BMP, PNG or JPG format. This version can also create fractal animations, and includes a real-time fractal renderer (FractSaver2) and a Winamp plug-in (VisFract2) to animate your tunes. Although its author stopped working on this project several years ago, the software is still available from fractovia.org (with the authors permission). Read the DSICLAIMER (second icon) before downloading.

GrafZViZion
GrafZViZion  ~  v4.2  ~  Win9x/Me  ~  658 Kb
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
Home page: http://www.eclectasy.com/Iterations-et-Flarium24/
GrafZViZion can save images in various formats (including jpg, tif, PNG and BMP), and has some special post-processing tools. Includes point-and-click zooming. Can be slow. Source code available.

INFI
INFI  ~  v1.0  ~  Win9x/Me/NT  ~  696 Kb
author: Mykko Pöyhönen
Home page: http://www.hut.fi/~mpoyhone/infi/
INFI incorporates many of FractInt's capabilities into Windows (any version): it can use FractInt maps and its images are saved in compatible gif format. Parameters can also be saved as bookmarks.

iFractales
iFractales  ~  v1.2  ~ MacOS X  ~  100 Kb
author: Software-DS
Home page: http://www.software-ds.com
iFractales is a simple program to draw Von Koch snowflake, Von Koch flowsnake, Sierpinski carpet, Sierpinski gasket, Fractal tree, Hilbert, Peano, Cantor's castle, Sierpinski pentagon. The user can choose the color (for a simple program like this one, it has a wonderful set of color controls), the drawing mode (fill or stroke), and the fractal’s depth. You can save the picture as TIFF files. Available in French and English.

InkBlot Kaos
InkBlot Kaos  ~  v2.9  ~  Win9x/Me  ~  190 Kb
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
Home page: http://www.eclectasy.com/Iterations-et-Flarium24/
InkBlot Kaos is one of the fastest generators in doing calculations. Notwithstanding its size, it is capable of generating stunning and beautiful images. One of my favorites. Source code available.

Inwards to Chaos
Inwards to Chaos ~  v1.0  ~  Win9x/NT  ~  1.11 Mb
author: Zandor
Home page: http://www.malilla.supereva.it
Inwards to Chaos can draw fractals and other complex (mathematical) systems, but it is more an exploration tool than a picture generator. Actually, it comes with two applications. The main one is Inwards to Chaos. You can define many mathematical parameters including region limits, complex parameters, radius, number of iterations, color palettes, transformations, etc. You can save your images or automatically use them as wallpaper. It is a little bit confusing at the beginning, and evidently still have some minor bugs that can cause it to close unexpectedly. The second module is IFS to Chaos. It is quite more manageable and stable, and is an excellent tool to explore iterated function systems (IFS) and attractors in a very simple and illustrating way.

Iterations
Iterations  ~  v29  ~  Win9x/Me  ~  661 Kb
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
Home page: http://www.eclectasy.com/Iterations-et-Flarium24/
Besides creating a myriad of fractal pictures, Iterations is also capable of generating fractal movies by zooming and panning in and around the image. The movies can be saved as .avi files. Source code available.
