Mandelbrot Root Explorer
Mandelbrot Root Explorer ~  v1.04  ~  Win9x/NT  ~  568 Kb
author: Junichi Sato
Home page: http://www002.upp.so-net.ne.jp/softec/soft/mandelbrot/
To quote its author, this program solves "Mandelbrot equation. Roots can be calculated, so many images can be made automatically. And classifications of Mandelbrot images are possible". Users can modified most of the image's parameters, and create zoom movies. Images can be saved as BMP or JPG files. It's one of my favorite tools for Mandelbrot set exploration at the moment. Source code available.

ManpWin
ManpWin  ~  v2.9 beta  ~  Win9x/Me/NT/XP  ~  1.02 Mb
author: Paul de Leeuw
Home page: http://www.deleeuw.com.au/
Another Windows version of Fractint. It's still a work in progress, but unlike the previous WinFract, this one is a modern 32-bit application with true color and animation support. Images can be saved as PNG files. Fractint color maps and parameters files seems to be compatible with this program.

Mind-Boggling Fractals
Mind-Boggling Fractals Lite ~  v2.3  ~  Win9x/Me/NT  ~  1.83 Mb
author: Paul W. Carlson
Home page: http://www.simtel.net/pub/pd/54429.shtml
Mind-Boggling Fractals was a very interesting SHAREWARE fractal generator that could create very beautiful images. It was quite ease-to-use, suitable for both newbies and experts alike. Its most interesting features were its 35 built-in equations and its 20 rendering methods that gave images a 3D-like appearance (it also included an equation editor). MBF is no longer available. The only remains of this interesting app is a Lite version, which fortunately is still freely available from the Simtel network. It is a limited edition that only comes with 6 equations and 9 rendering methods.

PowerFrac
PowerFrac  ~  v1.0 b5+ ~  Win9x/Me  ~  152 Kb
author: Peter Pawlowski
Home page: direct download (see below)
Although PowerFrac is smaller than GF4 (the other great fractal generator from this same author), it is almost a beef up version of its sibling. It can do almost the same calculations, plus include several improvements. As an example, you can directly modified the generation algorithm for each picture. Parameter files can be saved, and pictures exported to BMP, PNG, RLE, JPG format, greyscale, or even set as wallpapers directly. It includes a real-time fractal renderer (FractSaver3) and some extra Winamp plug-ins. Although its author stopped working on this project several years ago, the software is still available from fractovia.org (with the authors permission). Read the DSICLAIMER (second icon) before downloading.

Quadrium
quadrium2  ~  v2.2  ~  MacOS X  ~  14.08 Mb*          SHAREWARE
author: gandreas software
Home page: http://projects.gandreas.com/quadrium
quadrium2 is a fractal/texture/"procedural art" generator that includes support for both PPC and Intel Macs (including accelerated rendering support via AltiVec/SSE2, as well as multiple threads).  It works by "wiring together" functional nodes, such as warpers, tilers, fractals, textures, adjusters, etc. It includes 30 different fractal types (as well as the ability to specify custom formulas), over 30 different coloring styles, 20 traps shapes and dozens of other variations. The program can also "mutate" images as well as "breed" multiple images together. It can generate high resolution images and animations. —GA
Notes: The specified size is for the app only package; the full package totals 28.6 Mb. quadrium2 is shareware, so if you want to keep it, don't forget to pay for it ($59.95).

Quadrium flame
quadrium | flame  ~  v1.1  ~  MacOS X  ~ 2.75 Mb*          SHAREWARE
author: gandreas software
Home page: http://projects.gandreas.com/quadriumflame
quadrium | flame is a flame fractal generator for both PPC and Intel Macs. It includes two dozen different kinds of "flames" (both 2D and 3D transformations, and strange attractors), as well as three dozen different "topologies" to allow for additional warping.  It also supports multiple coloring algorithms, layers (which control what flames influence what other flames), special effect traps, and even "fake 3D" effects. quadrium | flame also include the ability to "mutate" images, to "breed" multiple images together, and can generate high resolution images and animations. —GA
Notes: The specified size is for the app only package; the full package totals 25.0 Mb. quadrium2 is shareware, so if you want to keep it, don't forget to pay for it ($39.95).

Qtrnion
Qtrnion  ~  v0.03  ~  Win9x/Me/NT  ~  573 Kb
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
Home page: http://www.eclectasy.com/Iterations-et-Flarium24/
QTrnion uses Open-GL to plot Mandelbrot-based quaternion fractals and surface maps. Images can be saved as BMP files only. Zip file Includes source code.

Quat
Quat  ~  v1.20  ~  Win3.1/9x/Me/NT/XP/DOS & Linux  ~  1.05 Mb
author: Dirk Meyer
Home page: http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de
Quat can calculate three-dimensional fractal objects. You color the images using mathematical formulas with up to 50 colors or color ranges. Images are saved in true color mode.

author: Stephen C. Ferguson
Home page: http://www.eclectasy.com/Iterations-et-Flarium24/quaternia/
Quaternia is a small program to generate quaternion fractals. It is based on Frode Gill's Quaternion Generator (see above). Images can only be save as BMP files. The 238 kb zipped archive includes the source code. Freely available from Ferguson's home page.

Quaternion Generator
Quaternion Generator  ~  v1.2  ~  Win3.1/9x/Me  ~  398 Kb
author: Frode Gill
Home page: http://home.hia.no/~fgill/ [offline]
This program will generate Quaternion-Julia fractals. Images cannot be save (although you can save the quaternion values), but you can copy them to the clipboard and paste them into any graphics editor. The help file includes a short explanation on this kind of fractal. Very slow.

Quaternion Julia Navigator
Quaternion Julia Navigator  ~  v0.91  ~  Win9x/Me/NT  ~  548 Kb
author: PFF Software
Home page: http://www.pff-software.nl/qjn.html
This program will calculate 3d slices of 4d quaternion Julia fractals. Needs a 16-bit or better display to operate. Very easy to use. Image size is limited to 400x400 resolution.
