Ramping production of lithium-ion batteries to accelerate tert-amylbenzene demand in Asia Pacific

As an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) used in various clinical products to being used as an electronic additive in the making of lithium-ion batteries, tert amylbenzene (TAB) has gained wide-spread recognition across diverse industries. The chemical substance acts as a crucial intermediate in the production of hydrogen peroxide which is predominantly utilized to prevent skin infection caused by minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.

Adding to its application in the medical and pharmaceutical sector, TAB serves as a building block in the synthesis of amorolfine, a potent antifungal API that is used to treat fungal infections of finger and toenails. Mounting initiatives to ramp up hydrogen peroxide production may incite the supply of tert amylbenzene over time.

In 2020, Indian chemical company, Meghmani Finechem finalized the installation of an integrated hydrogen peroxide plant in existing Chloralkali and Derivative Complex and initiated commercial production from 30%. Claims are made that hydrogen peroxide developed from the plant will be used by industries like organic peroxides, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

TAB is also a key component in most amorolfine synthesis processes. Recognized as a principal active ingredient in medicinal antifungal nail lacquers and shampoos, amorolfine is used for the treatment of fungal infections such as onychomycosis and dermatomycosis.

Onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the nail, is generally difficult to treat and requires long-term treatment and good compliance to achieve eradication of the fungus. In a bid to develop an efficient treatment for this conditions, many pharmaceutical firms are engaging in R&D and clinical trials. Almirall, S.A is one such firm that had announced that its pivotal study for P-3058 (10% terbinafine nail solution) met the primary endpoint of complete cure rate and key secondary endpoints in the treatment of mild to moderate onychomycosis.

In terms of valuation, the global tert-amylbenzene market  size is estimated to reach around US$100 million by 2026.

Intensifying demand for rechargeable LIBs (lithium-ion batteries) in the electric vehicle and consumer electronic sector could also bolster the growth prospects of tert-amylbenzene industry. The chemical substance is added into rechargeable LIBs to prevents cases of overheating, fire and explosion, which could have a detrimental impact on users as well as the surrounding environment.

Addition of tert amylbenzene as an electrolyte additive in rechargeable LIBs can enhances the performance of batteries by improving thermal stability and ionic conductivity. It can further reduce the flammability of electrolytes and provide overcharge protection. With electric vehicles steadily replacing conventional fossil fueled vehicles, the demand for tert-amylbenzene could spur exponentially over time.

A report from India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) states that EV sales in India accounted around 3,80,000 in 2019-20. Base on this trajectory it is likely that the region’s EV market may hit 6.34 million-unit annual sales by 2027. Meanwhile, annual battery demand is projected to grow at 32%, reaching 50GWh by 2027, implicating a possible valuation of $14.9 billion over the predicted period.

Reliable, safe and high-efficient lithium-ion batteries are also of key importance to the consumer electronic industry. With gripping demand for longer lasting batteries in application like smartphones and other portable electronic devices, the necessity for tert amylbenzene in battery manufacturing could intensify in the ensuing years.

Hefty investments in battery production could support industry growth. Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) has recently devised plans to pump US$5 billion in a lithium battery plant in Indonesia.

In essence, ramping up efforts to overhaul existing mobility solutions to more eco-friendly electric alternatives, as well as stellar advancements in the technological and pharmaceutical landscape could endorse the tert-amylbenzene market with substantial growth strides over the course of 2020-2026.
