The group has been able to demonstrate the method allows release of the active ingredient at a constant rate which prevents the risk of side-effects due to overdose.

Why are drug integrated polymer fibers gaining traction in biomedical applications?

PLA, PLLA, PCL, and PGA are among the different types of biocompatible and biodegradable polymer fibers. These fibers can be produced using affordable manufacturing processes that require less complex equipment. Desired degradation kinetics and mechanical characteristics and of these polymers fibers can be achieved by regulating the curing temperature, curing time, and shear stress depending on the intended biomedical application.

Drug integrated polymer fibers are available in a range of custom shapes and sizes. These fibers are typically manufactured using melt extrusion method, which uses high-temperature conditions and high shear stress, on a commercial scale. Manufacturers are constantly experimenting with newer materials as well as manufacturing technologies.
