Discord gaming app to become a general-purpose communications platform

Discord application, which was originally launched with a focus on video games, has reportedly announced that it is planning to emerge into a more general-purpose communications platform.

Jason Citron, the Founder and CEO of Discord, has stated that the company’s original branding did not stay much as people had started using the platform for other purposes than playing games. He has added that this has been imperative in sending wrong signal to the public, making it difficult for people to bring wider community on Discord. The first few conversations anyone has with the company related to its recent mainstreaming could be intimidating as the platform has become complex with many features, added Citron.

The company has stated that some crucial front-facing changes have been incorporated into the new platform. Discord’s website “discordapp.com” has been changed into “discord.com”, and the company’s tagline has become “Your place to talk”. The gaming rates have been displayed on the website’s front page with none of them being much prominent, and the references and jokes within the software have been made less specific to gaming so that every user can participate, making the platform more welcoming.

Discord has also added new server templates to the new platform to facilitate the setting up of new servers and has also streamlined its onboarding experience. It has also fixed the bugs issue further increasing its voice and video capacity, performance, and reliability. The company has also launched a Safety Center to make users aware of the rules and tools that can be availed for dealing with unwelcome interactions.

As per sources, Discord has decided to extend its ambitions as the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has pushed the use of conferencing software like the Zoom application. This has, in turn, prompted Discord to increase its streaming viewer limit from 10 to 50 for accommodating the surged demand as the company considers it to be an ideal time to go mainstream.
