Finnish mobile phone company, HMD Global has reportedly acquired rights for Nokia’s prior owned PureView brand from Microsoft Corp., a move which would eventually allow HDM to introduce PureView powered handset models in the smartphone market.
As per official reports, the PureView brand was first introduced with the launch of Nokia’s 808 Pureview mobile in 2013 and was later acquired by Microsoft as a part of Nokia’s Devices and Services division deal in 2014.
While PureView was introduced on Symbian OS-based mobiles, it expanded its reach to the Windows Phone segment powered by Nokia Lumia 920, 1020 and 1520 handsets. Reportedly, Nokia’s PureView based phones were known to provide the best overall camera experience in the smartphone market, thanks to the brand’s upmost camera quality.
Beside PureView brand’s latest entry in HDM’s portfolio, HDM has also reportedly partnered with Nokia’s old brand licensee, Zeiss in a bid to introduce its high-end optics on its upcoming smartphones. Reports suggest, the original Nokia 8 was launched last year and was reportedly titled the first ever Nokia smartphone to run on Android OS along with Zeiss optics-powered dual rear camera.
Although, the last model that carried the PureView branding was the Lumia 950, the Lumia 1020 and 808 PureView were reported to be the best-known handsets which eventually made the PureView brand strong enough to compete with tougher flagships offered by companies such as Sony, HTC and Samsung.
Although, modern smartphones manufactured by leading players like Apple, Google and Samsung provide much better picture quality than the old Lumia brand, the acquisition demonstrates HMD Global’s attempt to play off nostalgia for the legacy of the Nokia brand and its plans for its upcoming smartphones.
Sources cite, the company could bring an Android OS supported Nokia 808 PureView or the famous Nokia 1020 via this acquisition.
