India has had a longstanding relationship with Sweden, dating back to 2018, when both the countries came together to ink an innovation deal. However, the two countries have recently taken their partnership a step forward by announcing the formation of Sweden-India Transport Innovation and Safety Partnership (SITIS).

Reportedly, the new partnership was announced in the presence of prominent individuals like Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure, Thomas Eneroth, and Nitin Gadkari, India’s Minister of Transport and Highways, along with senior management members and CEOs of numerous Indian and Swedish academia, research institutes and companies.

Sources cite that leading Indian and Swedish institutes and firms with road safety expertise have joined forces to create SITIS as a center for excellence in traffic safety research and a long-term platform for innovation.

Moreover, the SITIS alliance would focus on raising awareness and understanding about traffic safety in India, while providing key insights into fundamental challenges often faced by numerous fast-growing economies.

The alliance would offer one of a kind opportunity to evaluate and inform technology & policy priorities in both the nations. Besides, the insights inherited from SITIS research would play a pivotal role in developing road infrastructure in different regions of the world, further improving and strengthening traffic safety rules and norms.

According to Volvo Group CEO, Martin Lundstedt, who also is one of the initiators of SITIS, the company understands the significance of road safety in the development of the world. SITIS was inspired by this same reason and, with the help of this program, the company can now broaden its understanding of India’s ambition in order to lower fatalities on road.

Lundstedt added that every individual that aims to simplify their region’s road safety could benefit from these learnings as they help in enhancing safety efforts. By bringing premier research & academic institutes and prominent companies of both nations together, SITIS has integrated the road safety landscape new and advanced solutions.
