Lehigh, a North America based world leading producer of bulk and bagged cement and CSS Knowledge Centre, a Canada based non-profit organization, reportedly announced to jointly examine a feasibility study of a business-scale carbon capture and storage project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The research aims to target the feasibility of capturing CO2 from the flue gas of Lehigh’s Edmonton cement plant, notably reducing the process and combustion of greenhouse gas emissions. The study will also include an extensive business case analysis, cost estimation and engineering designs.
The feasibility study of CSS to cut GHG emissions is North America’s first in the cement industry. The feasibility analysis at Lehigh’s Edmonton cement plant is one of the leading developments, positioning it to be world’s first to perform full-size carbon capture in the cement industry. The research will target a carbon dioxide capture rate from 90%-95%, with fundamental learnings from BD3.
The International Knowledge Centre and Lehigh will conduct the study together. The CSS Knowledge Centre provides an experience-based knowledge based on lessons learned from BD3, needed to implement and enhance the operation of large-scale CCS.
Emissions Reduction Alberta is investing $1.4M to examine the feasibility study of CCS on a cement facility. ERA plans to invest the capital in promising technologies to cut greenhouse gas emissions and boost the competitiveness of existing and new industries in Alberta. The company is helping Alberta transition to a lower carbon future with a stronger, more diversified economy.
