Professional chefs have termed cannabis- and CBD-infused food as the top food trend of the year 2019.
The American multinational confectionary company Mondelez Inc. is reportedly planning to include CBD-infused snacks in its line of products, which includes Cadbury chocolate, Chips Ahoy cookies, Nutter Butter cookies and Nilla Wafers.
Reportedly, Mondelez denied that consumer will be offered CBD-infused Oreos as non-psychoactive compound in cannabis might be unsuitable for the family brands of the company. The Oreo maker may add the ingredient to other products or even create a new product line.
Dirk Van de Put, CEO, Mondelez, reportedly stated that the company is getting ready for CBD-infused snacks but will stay within the legal boundaries.
Reportedly, several startups have already started selling CBD-infused foods and drinks. Major companies, like Coca-Cola, Mondelez, are still sitting on the fences while federal health officials consider new rules regulating the industry.
The CBD-infused snacks will soon roll out in the mainstream food market, cited reliable sources.
President Donald Trump has legalized most CBD-infused products in December, when he inked the farm bill into law. Thereafter, the retailers like CVS and Walgreens have started selling a limited number of CBD products such as creams and lotions. However, Food and Drug Administration has prohibited the use of CBD in food or beverages. The regulator has set its first date for public hearings on the matter for next month due to pressure from Congress.
Van de Put reportedly said that the space is bit clearer for non-food products. The company has been hoping that FDA will come up with some clarity about edibles in the coming months, he further added.
