  • The deal would facilitate the development of new communication services for consumers and businesses.
  • Oracle will also assist Telefonica in integrating data across its operations.

Spain-headquartered multinational telecom firm Telefonica S.A. has reportedly signed a multi-year initiative with cloud service provider Oracle Corporation to move a significant part of its database systems to the cloud.

As per the deal, Telefonica and Oracle will develop an infrastructure that supports the Spanish company’s communications network into a shared, open-standard platform. The new platform is designed to support its growing digital portfolios, such as IoT (Internet of Things) and 5G services.

The telecom operator can now build a dedicated cloud platform on-premises to support its mission-critical internal and commercial operations, including billing, business intelligence services, customer management products, and revenue management.

By providing a secure, highly available platform based on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Oracle will assist Telefonica in integrating data across its operations.

The cloud service provider will operate the new platform in Telefonica’s data centers to reduce costs, guarantee security, and comply with European data laws.

In this context, Fidel Jesus Fernandez, Tech and IT Transformation Director at Telefonica mentioned that as they tap into new opportunities, they need to simplify and consolidate their technological infrastructure to establish a scalable and robust cloud platform in their own data centers to meet business demands.

The embattled operator, affected in recent years by competition, increasingly low-cost Spanish market, and heavy costs as it restructures its physical and digital infrastructure, is counting on digital transformation during the pandemic.

Cloud computing has seen a surge as companies across the globe seek to move their systems online, benefitting service providers like Oracle, IBM, Amazon, and Microsoft. However, it has also become a source of controversy due to the legal and cybersecurity dangers that cloud-based operations involve.
