South African Airlines (SAA), the Government of South Africa owned flag carrier has reportedly announced to be adding A350 – 900s to their fleet from the second half of 2019.
Reportedly, these flights are to be leased for a period of up to three years and claim to fly distance between Johannesburg and JFK (New York).
As per a statement SAA mentioned that as compared to the current aircraft they are using i.e. an A340-600, the new planes will reduce the fuel burn by 20%.The airline further claims that the plane will comprise 246 economy seats, the first six rows of which will feature extra leg room.
Apparently, the airline is undergoing major issues, with their CEO resigning and the government unable to focus attention the company. South Africa Airlines is also facing massive financial crisis along with an inefficient fleet and route network.
As per industry experts, unlike the elongated procedures of ordering a plane, the South African Airlines will receive the A350s earlier than expected. Along with SAA, another airline leasing two A350s later this year is Fiji Airways.
Citing reports, SAA was declared bankrupt in September 2018. The airline has received fundings from the government further indicating that the government is not keen on putting the services to a halt.
According to trusted sources, the airlines has not confirmed the date for the leased planes beginning operations.
