With the pandemic waning, the return to daily life is accompanied by a rise in demand for ride-hailing services. Mobility service giant Uber Technologies Inc. has reportedly revised its forecasts for first-quarter core profit as it witnessed a faster than expected recovery due to a spike in airport rides, reopening of offices, and food order rate.

The company’s share rose by 5% in premarket trading, with its smaller competitor also recording gains. It now anticipates EBITDA of USD 130 million to USD 150 million in the first three of 2022, compared to USD 100 million to USD 130 million in its previous forecast, as per a company filing.

Uber’s Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi stated that the mobility business is bouncing back from the Omicron crisis much faster than they anticipated. He also claimed that the company’s gross bookings for the airport saw an incline of 50% month-on-month in February and is likely to see one of the strongest demands in the upcoming travel season.

In comparison to February pre-pandemic volume, ride-hail trips fell short by just 10%. Mobility gross bookings, on the other hand, saw a 95% recovery as compared to February 2019.

On the delivery business, the restrictions amid the pandemic compelled consumers to become more reliant on shopping for food and groceries online. This trend has continued strong into this year, with Uber’s gross bookings reaching an all-time high in February.

Several organizations are now bringing their staff back to office premises after two years of the pandemic that forced many to adapt to a work-from-home environment, implying an uptick in ridership over the next few months.

It is worth noting that ridesharing demand may continue to an upward trend due to exorbitant gas prices. The costs were already alarming long before the Ukraine invasion and have escalated since the start of the war.
