Vodafone Idea starts upgrading its 3G users to 4G in key markets

Vodafone Idea Limited has reportedly begun upgrading its 3G subscribers to 4G in its crucial markets. The company has also announced its best position to proceed with the upgradation of its 2G users to 4G but will continue with the delivery of basic voice based services to its 2G customers, added sources.

According to Ravinder Thakkar, the Managing Director and CEO of Vodafone Idea, VIL is presently best placed to proceed with the upgradation of 3G and 2G users to high speed 4G data services, given that the country has the highest quantum of spectrum, a large part of which has already been re-farmed for 4G. He has further added that with the consolidation nearing completion, VIL has already extended its coverage to 1 billion people in India, in turn enabling them to avail faster data services throughout the country.

For the record, Vodafone Idea had a total mobile subscriber base of 30.5 crore at the end of June, of which 11.6 crore comprised mobile broadband customers, 10.4 crore of which included 4G customers with the rest availing 3G data services.

As per a statement by Vodafone Idea, its 3G data users will be gradually upgraded to 4G across all markets in a phased manner. The company has also begun informing its clients in the markets where re-farming is getting completed, state sources.

Vodafone Idea has also stated that the integration of Idea and Vodafone network has considerably improved the company’s 4G capacity, adding that the integration has enabled the utilization of latest technologies that facilitate the deployment of 4G in radiowaves, previously utilized for delivering 3G data services.

VIL will be able to provide faster 4G data speeds to its 3G subscribers via the Vi GIGAnet network, state reports. The company’s enterprise clientele utilizing its 3G based services will also be upgraded to 4G data services and other IoT services and applications based on 4G, in a phased manner, cited sources.
