Young, 57, had been in the Air Force in Vietnam. At one time he was married and lived in Maysville. He was homeless and living in Covington when Schuler started working with him about a year ago. He helped Young get veterans benefits and had arranged for him to move into an efficiency apartment at the end of December. Young died a week before he was to move. His body was found under the 11th Street viaduct in Covington, where he had been seen drinking the night before.
Young's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Linneman Funeral Home in Covington. His ashes will be carried to Seventh and Washington streets, where an honor squad made up of members of the Simon Kenton American Legion Post 20 and Ralph Fulton VFW Post 6423, of Erlanger, will give a rifle salute and play Taps. Friends and staff of the Recovery Network will then carry Young's ashes to the 11th Street viaduct and scatter the ashes.
"We found out from close friends that his wish was to be cremated," said Schuler. He said the funeral and cremation will cost about $1,500. "We will have about $700 left over," Schuler said. "We plan to contact donors and ask if they would like us to send it back to them, or if they want to donate it to the Recovery Network to help other homeless vets." Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 88 donated for the military honor squad.
