T&T Supermarket, a Canadian supermarket chain, has recently started offering temperature checks for customers and employees before they enter at its stores. This initiative has been taken to protect them against the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The supermarket chain has reportedly stated that the move of checking body temperature has been carried out to ensure the health and safety of customers and staff members as fever is the most prominent symptom for the COVID-19 disease. The company’s location in Surrey started providing voluntary temperature-taking from the 9th of April.

In line with the safety guidelines of the public health bodies, the supermarket chain will not allow any customer suffering from fever to enter its stores. It also has donated 1 million masks to the healthcare workers. Additionally, a foundation led by Cindy Lee, T&T founder, has donated money to assist B.C. hospitals in purchasing 2 ventilators.

According to Tina Lee, Chief Executive Officer of T&T Supermarket, the recent temperature checking is a voluntary service that will be offered at most of its stores. She added that anyone with fever is told to rest at home as well as contact healthcare providers to consult for the same.

Loblaw Companies, which acquired T&T in 2009, is currently not planning to follow the same coronavirus prevention strategy of T&T.

T&T operates in 3 provinces namely British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. Its grocery stores in Canada have taken necessary control measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 disease since the global pandemic was declared in March. As its services are deemed essential, it has observed an increased demand for its products as well as line-ups of customers outside its stores.

Additional precautionary measures of the supermarket chain across various Canada stores include safeguarding cashiers with plexiglass shields at the checkout counters, sanitizing products, increasing pay for workers, and maintaining 6 ft. distances among shoppers.
